BIO

Colonel Jonathan Shine earned his commission in 1998 after graduating from Princeton University’s Army ROTC program. He has served in a variety of command and staff positions in the Republic of Korea, Fort Bragg, NC, Fort Stewart, GA, the Pentagon, Fort Bliss, TX, and Fort Irwin, CA. His combat deployments include three tours in Iraq (including the initial invasion of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003) and one deployment to Zabul Province, Afghanistan. Other career highlights include command of a Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) Battery and a M109A6 Paladin Self-Propelled Howitzer Battalion. He participated in several exercises in Europe and Africa as a part of the US Africa Command’s Regionally Aligned Force. From 2007-2009, COL Shine served as the Aide-de-Camp to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

COL Shine is currently an Assistant Professor of Strategy at the Army War College at Carlisle Barracks, PA, where he teaches courses on strategy and national security policy. He is also a PhD Candidate at the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs in the University of Pittsburgh. Jon is a graduate of Princeton University (BA in Political Economics) and Georgetown University (Masters in Public Policy Administration). His military education includes the Army’s Field Artillery Basic and Captains Career Courses, the Combined Arms Services Staff School, the US Marine Corps Command and Staff College, and the Army War College. He and his wife Ashley have three children: Bennett (17), Helen (13), and Graham (9).
