Civil-Military Relations Center Research Fellows
The Civil-Military Relations Center (CMRC) at the United States Army War College is pleased to an announce a new program for research fellows. We invite civil-military relations scholars and practitioners to apply for the inaugural cohort of CMRC research fellows.
CMRC research fellows are nonresident volunteers committed to increasing understanding of civil-military relations, stimulating communication and coordination on vital civil-military relations issues, bridging the civil-military divide, and cultivating civil-military norms within the profession of arms. Fellows volunteer for a one-year collaborative fellowship with the CMRC and contribute to the CRMC’s mission by offering expert voices to the animating issues of contemporary civil-military relations.
Expectations
The CMRC seeks fellows who will actively contribute to the CMRC through publications and collaboration with the CMRC-affiliated faculty of the U.S. Army War College. Research fellows may also be asked to support the planning for and participation in CMRC events, including the CMRC’s annual Civil-Military Relations Conference.
We aim to advance fellows’ civil-military relations research by facilitating relationships across CMRC’s network and developing synergies across the fellows cohort. CMRC Research fellows may have additional opportunities to publish articles and deliver podcasts through the Army War College’s online journal, War Room.
Additional Considerations
Preparing the U.S. Army to succeed in future conflict requires a team of critical and creative thinkers with diverse experiences and perspectives. We seek a diverse pool of talented applicants from various backgrounds: military and national security professionals, analysts, and academics, from the United States and its allies and partners. A major consideration in selecting fellows is how prospective fellows might complement each other’s research as a cohort and with CMRC-affiliated faculty, in addition to the merits of their research.
Competitive applicants will have demonstrated an ability to carry out innovative and original research and to advance discussions about contemporary civil-military relations. They will be able to identify how their specific experiences, research interests, and expected contributions for the coming year align with the CMRC’s mission and research themes. This program is open to individuals of any age and citizenship who are committed to the ideals of the CMRC and the U.S. Army War College, although we are particularly interested in developing junior or mid-career professionals who seek an active but temporary relationship with the CMRC.
All positions are unpaid and accepted on a purely voluntary basis. On acceptance, fellows must complete a voluntary agreement with the CMRC. Fellows will serve a one-year term beginning on August 1, 2025. We will consider single-term renewals on a case-by-case basis.
Application Instructions
Applicants should send a CV, a published writing sample, and a one-page cover letter. The cover letter should:
- Address how the CMRC and the U.S. Army War College would benefit from their scholarship
- Provide a potential research agenda for the fellowship period
- Demonstrate interest in collaborating with U.S. Army War College faculty and the broader CMRC community to advance civil-military relations scholarship
